Safety Helmets Must Be Worn Catalogue published by www.estuarinepress.co.uk

Safety Helmets Must be Worn by editor Madelaine Murphy | Make Your Own Book
Artistsmeet.org is a Community Interest Company, aimed to foster and promote participating artists through critical engagement, developing and exploring opportunities, responsive to the needs of the artistic community, and the wider community in terms of providing opportunities for participation.

A question that arose within M:E:E:T was the role of the sketchbook. M:E:E:T is all about the here and now, the what's going on, about where an artist is with their work, and where they're going. As much as we celebrate the continued achievements of artists within M:E:E:T, by blogging on www.artistsmeet.org and www.facebook.com/Artists-Meet, the focus is on moving forward, through critical engagement of work in progress. An ongoing conversation with one's own work, and with others; discussion opens new channels, perspectives and ways of thinking and communicating. How instrumental is the sketchbook in an artists' continued development?

A year later, 'Safety Helmets Must Be Worn', a series of workshops exploring this question, and an exhibevent, aimed to explore the role of the sketchbook as the building site of artistic practice. How artists engage in creativity and playfulness, and where the artwork emerges from this chrysalis state, was the subject of the exhibevent, which took pace in Southend Library in March 2011.

Safety Helmets Must Be Worn:
Sketchbook Workshops, Oct/Nov 2010

Meet was really pleased to have Laura Keeble www.laurakeeble.com discuss her practice and the role of her sketchbooks - and to have the inside view on her work and the way she thinks in terms of contemporary art... Simon Monk simonmonk.com gave an excellent and entertaining presentation - a discussion on his current practice, and his journal reflects the integrity and excellence in the quality of his work.
Matt Fleming from the Permanent Bookshop and Gallery  Brighton, presented a range of artists books and limited edition print runs, it was great to see the range of books and artists working in this area, and a unique collection.
Many thanks to Simon, Laura, and Matt who very generously gave their time.
