Raku Skillshare with Kelly Foreman and Madelaine Murphy

Wednesday 27th July 9:30-1:30 & Wednesday 17th August, 10am-4pm
Raku is a Japanese outdoor firing method of glazing ceramics and bright glazes with lustrous surfaces can be achieved with a little skill. Kelly and Madelaine have been working together for a couple of years, and 'Get Fired Up', a collaborative Raku event, is held annually for the Leigh Art Trail. For more: www.getfiredup.org

Wednesday 27th July is a ceramics workshop to create work for glaze firing. On Wednesday 17th August, all of the work will have been biscuit fired in preparation for Raku. Kilns take about an hour and a half to fire up to temperature (950-1000c) so it's expected that each kiln will do several firings during the day. The work is fired to temperature, removed from the kiln, and put into a combustible, like sawdust, and from there, removed and put into water. During these process the characteristic black body of the clay and the lustre on the surface of the glaze emerge.

As with all artistsmeet.org skillshares, the quality of technical information is excellent, delivered by specialists, but unlike any other organisation, the skillshares are offered to support you in your own professional development. It may be to broaden your skillbase, to explore the possibilities that it can offer your current practice, or extend your practice to something new. Key questions, such as the visual language of Raku, the technical possibilities in producing work, and the historical and contemporary context of raku will be explored through discussion during both practical sessions.

Bookbinding Skillshare with Karen Apps

A real hands- on thing... learned loads - and it was great to work within our peer-group, knowing that we are all aiming for different outcomes, so these skills will be put to use in many different ways.
"Firstly many thanks for organising the book workshop, Madelaine. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was fantastic and would relish some more."
Lola Swain

Artists books and hand-bound books were on view and for sale at The Book Art Fair at Leigh Library, hosted by the Leigh Art Trail 2011, from the 14th-16th June.

Many thanks to Karen Apps for resourcing and delivering an excellent session.
